Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis Fusion Degree as an Age Estimation Tool: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study

نویسندگان

چکیده

Background: Considering the late ossification potential of spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS), it can be used as a tool to estimate age in adolescents. The time SOS fusion is known vary different populations. Objectives: This study aimed assess degree Iranian individuals, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan. Patients and Methods: CBCT images 240 patients (126 females 114 males), aged 6 - 25 years, were assessed regarding fusion, based on four-stage scoring system. Spearman’s correlation coefficient test regression analysis performed between stage. Mann-Whitney was also applied determine differences males females. Besides, Kruskal-Wallis median values. Results: completely open at mean 7.63 years 8.85 males. partially fused (stage 1) 8 10 3) 12 16 results showed significant positive relationship (rs = 0.783, P < 0.001 rs 0.911, males). Conclusion: closure for estimation population. presented method which highly accurate estimation.

Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis Fusion Correlates with Cervical Vertebrae Maturation

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the closure stage of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis and the maturational stage of the cervical vertebrae (CVM) in growing and young adult subjects using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT images with an extended field of view obtained from 315 participants (148 females and 167 males; mean age 15.6 ±7.3 years; range 6 to...

A Review of the Use of Spheno - Occipital Synchondrosis as an Age Indicator and Its Implications for Sri Lanka

A spheno – occipital synchondrosis is a cartilaginous joint, a growth centre found in the base of the skull between the basilar part of the occipital bone and the body of the sphenoid bone joining them together with a hyaline cartilage. This joint is important in cranio facial development for both vertical axis and horizontal plains resulting in the increase of facial height and width. The hyal...

Knowledge of Iranian dentists about cone beam computed tomography. A questionnaire study

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), is a relatively new imaging technique in dental and maxillofacial fields, with versatile abilities and applications. If the advantage of CBCT is well understood and established; the technique will be properly applied in dental planning and treatment along with tremendous benefits to the patients. This study was designed to evaluate the knowled...

Comparison of transportation and centering ability using RECIPROC and iRace: A cone-beam computed tomography study

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Root canal treatment, especially in curved and constricted root canals, can be very difficult and time consuming. Several investigations have compared the reciprocating and full sequence motions in terms of shaping ability. The purpose of the present study was to compare the root canal transportation and centering ability of RECIPROC and iRace using cone-beam computed tomogr...

Brief communication: timing of spheno-occipital closure in modern Western Australians.

The spheno-occipital synchondrosis is a craniofacial growth centre between the occipital and sphenoid bones-its ossification persists into adolescence, which for the skeletal biologist, means it has potential application for estimating subadult age. Based on previous research the timing of spheno-occipital fusion is widely variable between and within populations, with reports of complete fusion...
